OEM vs ODM Clothing Manufacturing

OEM means you own the design and we produce it; ODM means we develop the style with you. MOQ is 50 pcs per color, samples 7 days, bulk 30 days.

6 min read

The difference is who owns the design. In OEM you bring the tech pack, pattern or reference sample and we manufacture exactly that. In ODM we develop the style with you from a direction, a mood board or a target price, then manufacture it. Both routes run through the same production line at our factory: MOQ from 50 pcs per color on stock fabric, sampling in 7 days, bulk in 30 days from the day the deposit and confirmed sample are both in place. The route you choose changes who carries the development cost, who owns the pattern, and how fast you can get to a sellable product.

Neither is better. OEM protects a signature fit; ODM shortens the path from idea to a first order when you do not yet have a pattern room.

What OEM actually requires from you

OEM is only fast when the input is complete. A build-ready OEM package contains:

  • A tech pack: measurements per size, construction notes, seam types, trims, label placement.
  • A size grading rule, or an existing graded spec you want copied.
  • Fabric direction: composition, weight in GSM, stretch, and a colour reference.
  • A reference sample if the fit is difficult — a dance costume with a fitted bodice, a leotard with a specific stretch and recovery.

If you only have a reference photo, you can still start: a clear reference photo plus your target quantity and market is enough for a first quote, and we tell you what is still missing before sampling starts. What you cannot skip is the measurement sheet, because "size M" means nothing until it is written down.

OEM also means ownership is clean. The pattern we make from your tech pack stays on file for your repeat orders, and repeats are faster and cheaper because the pattern and fabric are already locked. We keep your approved sample and pattern on file and match the dye lot against that sample on repeat orders, flagging any difference before cutting rather than after shipping.

What ODM looks like in practice

ODM starts with a direction, not a drawing. A typical brief is: "stretch dance costume, 4-way stretch fabric, retail around $59, spring delivery". From there the work is a development loop:

  1. Direction. You give a market, a price band and 3–10 reference images. We come back with a fabric shortlist and construction options.
  2. Development sample. We build a style from our base patterns. Sampling takes 7 days from the moment the sample fee is in place.
  3. Fit and cost round. You comment on fit, length, lining, trim. We return a revised sample and a firm unit price.
  4. Bulk. 30 days from deposit and approved sample.

The commercial trade is that the pattern may be shared across clients unless you buy exclusivity. Ask about that early, in writing. If the style must be only yours, say so before development starts, because exclusivity is a term of the deal, not a footnote after it.

Cost and risk: where the money actually moves

The hidden cost in both routes is the same: sample rounds. Each round has its own 7-day clock. Sellers who lose a season usually lose it by starting a second and third round on details that could have been settled in the brief.

Choosing between them for one order

Use this test. If any of these is true, choose OEM:

  • The fit is your product's main selling point.
  • You already sell this style and want a second supplier.
  • You have a measurement sheet and a reference sample.

Choose ODM if any of these is true:

  • You are entering a category and have no pattern assets.
  • Your priority is a first order in weeks, not months.
  • You want the factory to also solve fabric and construction questions.

You can also mix the two across a range: OEM for your core bestseller, ODM for the accessories that fill the collection. We do both, and the MOQ rules are the same either way — 50 pcs per colour on stock fabric, 200 pcs in total for mixed colours and sizes, and a higher, separately quoted quantity when the fabric has to be made.

What we need from you to quote

For OEM: tech pack or reference sample, quantity, size curve, target market. For ODM: reference images, target price, target delivery window. Either way, send it through the enquiry form and we reply within 24 hours with a price, fabric options and a sampling date. The style capabilities per category — what our pattern room and lines are actually set up to run — are listed under manufacturing capabilities, and anonymised order records by category, quantity and lead time are on the cases page.

Frequently asked questions

Can I request exclusivity on an ODM style?

Yes, but it has to be agreed at the start of development and stated in the order, because the base pattern may otherwise be reused. Tell us before the first sample is made, not after bulk. If exclusivity is agreed, we will not offer that exact style to another client for the agreed period and market.

Does ODM change the MOQ?

The MOQ rule does not change: 50 pcs per colour on stock fabric, 200 pcs in total for mixed colours and sizes, and a higher quantity for custom fabric that we quote per style. What ODM does change is your development cost, not your production minimum. If your ODM style lands on a custom fabric, the fabric mill's dye minimum sets the real floor.

Who owns the pattern in OEM, and what is the fastest path to a first order?

In OEM you own the pattern once the development is paid for. We keep it on file for your repeat orders so the fit is reproducible, and we do not produce that pattern for another buyer. For speed, send a reference photo with your target quantity, market and delivery date — that is enough for a first quote, and OEM or ODM can usually be confirmed in the same exchange.
